13 Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are a few foods that should be avoided. The reason for this being that such foods might harm the baby or make the pregnant lady ill. Pregnant lady should have complete information about the foods that should be taken and avoided. Some of the must-avoid foods are as follows:

1. Kinds of Cheese

Pregnant lady should avoid eating mould ripened soft cheese, for instance, brie, camembert, etc. All types of camembert should be avoided, whether made from cows’ or goats’ milk. In addition, avoiding Danish blue, Roquefort and gorgonzola is good for health during this period. The reason for this being that the soft cheese is less acidic as compared to hard cheese. Soft cheese contains much less moisture and become breeding ground for bacteria.

2. Pâté

Pregnant ladies should avoid all the kinds of pâté, be it vegetable pâtés or others. They contain listeria, which might lead to infection.

3. Raw Eggs

Pregnant ladies should always make sure that the eggs are completely cooked before eating them. The whites of the eggs and the yolk, both should be solid. Cooked eggs prevent the risk of food poisoning through salmonella. This food poisoning does not harm baby, but the pregnant lady could suffer from diarrhea or vomiting.

4. Undercooked Meat

Pregnant ladies should make sure that the meat that they will consume is thoroughly cooked. The meat should always be steaming hot without any trace of blood. Extra care should be taken in case of pork, sausages, minced meat, poultry, etc.

5. Liver Products

Pregnant ladies should avoid liver products, like pâté, sausage, etc. These products contain vitamin A in high quantities that might harm the baby.

6. Vitamin Supplements

High dose of multivitamin supplements or other supplements that contain Vitamin A should be avoided by pregnant ladies.

7. Raw Shellfish

Eating raw shellfish is better than consuming raw ones like lobster, crab, scallops, clams, mussels, etc. The presence of harmful bacteria in the raw ones might result in food poisoning.

8. Sushi

The fish used to prepare sushi should be frozen first. Occasionally, fish might contain parasitic worms that might make the pregnant lady ill. Freezing the fish kills the worms, making it safe to consume.

9. Peanuts

Many people are allergic to peanuts or foods that contain them. Hence, pregnant ladies should take care about eating peanuts, in spite of peanuts being a part of balanced diet.

10 Unpasteurized Milk

Pregnant ladies should drink milk only after it is pasteurized or treated with ultra heat.

11. Ice Cream

It is safe to eat soft ice-creams during pregnancy. Precaution should be taken while preparing ice cream at home. The milk used for preparing ice cream should be pasteurized.

12. Dirty Foods

All the foods, be it fruits, salads, vegetables, etc. should be properly washed before consuming. There should not be any kind of soil or traces of soil on them.

13. Caffeine

Drinking excessive coffee or liquids with high caffeine might lead to low weight of babies during birth. This might augment the risk of grave health problems later.
