Ayurveda
According to Ayurvedic principles, people and nature are linked by the five elements - fire, water, air, earth, and ether - which are expressed in the three life forces, the doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that people get sick when the balance among the doshas is disrupted. To harmonize a person's doshas, massages, affusions, herbal remedies, and diet changes may be prescribed. It is thought that when you understand your doshas, you can make diet and lifestyle changes that will help you live a healthier, longer, and happier life. Many people in India are still treated according to this healing tradition.
There are few Ayurvedic practitioners in the United States. If you are interested in this type of treatment, choose a practitioner who combines Western medical training with Ayurvedic training. Or perhaps your regular physician would consider using an Ayurvedic consultant.
